Does Ryan Gosling create meaning within his films?

Projector: Item 1 image of Ryan gosling 30 seconds on screen
Presenter: Ryan Gosling was born on November 12, 1980, in London, Ontario. In high school Ryan excelled at drama and fine arts, and started to perform as a singer with his sister at talent shows. His first part in a show was in the Mickey mouse club where he beat out 17,000 hopefuls at an open audition. After 2 years on the show Gosling then took on an acting career with parts in a number of TV shows, making his Hollywood breakthrough in the film 'The believer'. Ryan Gosling peaked his career with his role in 'Half Nelson' 2006 (item1)
Projector: image fades out on comes clip from Half nelson 1'30" up to 3'00" Item
Presenter: my research project looks at how Ryan Goslings use of his performance to create meanings within his films, in this extract we see him show through his performance a character at conflict with the side of the aspirational teacher and the cocaine addict, and as item 4 in my catalogue explains he was nominated for an Oscar for his performance showing he did a very good job at creating meaning.

  •  How Gosling creates meanings within his films.
  • His diversity of roles.
  • Awards his won and been nominated for showing he clearly showed meaning through his performance.
Presenter: in this presentation I will cover….reads out following bullet points on slide.
How Gosling creates Meanings within his films.
Projector: shows interview on Crazy Stupid Love with Ryan Gosling Item 10
Presenter: this shows how gosling creates meaning within Crazy stupid love as he did outside research for his character Jacob looking at pick-up lines also he stats how the clothes for his different characters and the cast he works with help him perform his character to the best of his ability. Item 9 also supports this making it even more useful as he states in another interview that he did research to make his character Jacob more believable as he learnt how to make cocktails and played in a band to get in to the right mind-set and make it easier for him to portray meanings to the audience.
Projector: picture from article on Ryan Gosling by Alice Fisher Item 6
Presenter: Item 6 explains that Ryan gosling sticks to a lot of indie films with extremely challenging roles for example half nelson and drive, this shows his apparent love for acting as he only chooses roles that challenge him. Ryan Gosling takes on these challenging roles and usually smashes them as it says in item 6 in ten films he has made he’s been nominated for 32 awards showing that he must clearly create meaning through his performance even within these challenging roles. Item 8 in my catalogue also supports Item 6 as it explains he chooses a lot of films that make the audience struggle to engage with the characters and circumstances within the films, however through his performance he creates a strong engagement with audiences. It also says he chooses a lot of small scale project films, but he turns these small scale films into big blockbusters.
Projector: shows clip of Ryan Gosling in drive dir. By Nicholas Refn (item11). This is an extract from the opening scene of drive where we are already shown a lot about ryan goslings character from his performance.
Presenter: in this extract from the opening scene of drive (Item2) we see Ryan Gosling creating Meaning through his performance, and telling us a lot about his character right from the start of the film. In this extract we see him on one of his driving jobs being a group of burglar’s getaway driver. In this extract Ryan Goslings performance shows us that his character is a silent sort and doesn’t speak while there on the job but instead is focused on his work at hand. His performance also shows us his character stays focused and unnerved even under extreme sorts of pressure, which we are shown through the contrast of Ryan Goslings performance and the burglars performance as Goslings character looks calm and collected whereas they look panicked when their car is being chased by the police. Also the film as a hole tells us a lot about Goslings performance as in this film he is asked to perform a character with no name, suggesting that it is highly unlikely he was given any background information to his character the ‘Driver’, yet Gosling still gives an amazing performance showing he can still create meaning with little help from the character he plays.
Awards Gosling has won and been nominated for.
Projector: table from Wikipedia of the awards Ryan gosling has been nominated for and won in his life time showing that he has created meaning throughout his performances to have been nominated for so many awards. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_awards_and_nominations_received_by_Ryan_Gosling
Presenter: In my one focus film and supporting films Ryan gosling has won and been nominated for 33 awards suggesting just in these 3 films that Ryan gosling that many critics have thought that he has created extremely good meaning in his characters, for example in half nelson he was nominated for 10 best actor awards in exception of this he also won 3 awards for best actor in this film. Item 7 supports this because it explains that he won two golden globes for his performance in Crazy Stupid love and Ides of March, this backs up my area of topic as Golden Globes are very notable awards meaning he does create meanings within his films.
Ryan Goslings diversity of roles within his films
Projector: show the focus films and supporting films on screen with their screening covers.
Presenter: Through Items 1, 2&3 in my catalogue (my focus film and supporting films) we see how Ryan gosling can connect with the audience and tell them a story in a diversity of roles as they are all extremely different. For example Half Nelson is a drama, Drive a crime film and Crazy Stupid Love a romantic comedy, in all these films he manages to show and portray different meanings to different audiences through methods shown earlier on in my presentation. This diversity of roles also shows that he can connect to extremely different audiences for example ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ would be focused primarily on an audience of women, mainly teenage girls; whereas drive would instead be focused on the opposite sex with violent themes. Even though they are focused on separate audiences Ryan Gosling still manages to connect with them and tell the story of his character through a variety of performances, ranging from ‘hunk’ to slightly strange stunt driver. This all produces an exceptional good film. Also Not only does he show a variety of performances and diversity of roles but he also does it under extreme amount of pressure for example Item 7 in my article points out that he made 4 films in 2011 drive, blue valentine, ides of march and crazy stupid love; two of these being my supporting films. This therefore shows that even under extreme pressure Ryan gosling can still give an amazing variety of performances to make 4 Hollywood blockbusters.
